It is now four years since the military coup in Myanmar and the situation for workers in the country continues to deteriorate, with worsening working conditions and widespread forced labour.

The establishment of the so-called Myanmar Labour Confederation (MLC) is an attempt to replace the Confederation of Trade Unions Myanmar (CTUM) and its affiliates, silencing independent workers’ voices and further consolidating the military's grip on civil society while undermining workers’ rights.

The military’s direct interference in trade unions violates international labour standards, particularly ILO Convention.

The latest developments confirm the State Administration Council’s complete disregard for the recommendations of the ILO Commission of Inquiry (COI), which previously documented the regime’s systematic suppression of trade unions.

IndustriAll Europe, together with IndustriALL Global Union, stands in full solidarity with The Confederation of Trade Unions, Myanmar (CTUM), The Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (IWFM), and all independent trade unions in Myanmar facing persecution under the military regime.

This week, industriAll Europe and IndustriALL Global Union sent a letter to several EU politicians about the situation.

IndustriAll Europe’s General Secretary Judith Kirton-Darling, says: “The ongoing violence and oppression in Myanmar continue to violate the fundamental rights of workers and independent unions. The creation of the MLC is a direct assault on fundamental workers' rights, and we cannot stand by while Myanmar’s trade union movement is systematically dismantled.

“We stand in solidarity with those who resist this brutal regime. It is vital that the European Union, takes meaningful action. We continue to push for the protection of labour rights and workers' rights in Myanmar and the freedom of association.”
